UBC research team develops framework to save costs for serverless computing

The University of British Columbia, a top-ranked global research university in Canada, needed a better way to manage serverless cloud workloads and reduce computing costs. Working with Google Cloud Platform, the team behind UBC’s cloud research explored how to make serverless computing more efficient for researchers and developers.

Google Cloud Platform helped UBC build UnFaaSener using Google Cloud Functions and Pub/Sub, enabling workloads to be dynamically moved to idle virtual machines or other hosts based on cost and availability. The result was a more flexible, easy-to-use system that delivered up to 89.8% cost savings, while also benefiting from Google Cloud Research Innovator support, credits, and technical resources.
