U-NEXT Streaming video to millions with a modern CDN

U-Next, a Japanese video streaming platform serving 2.5 million subscribers, needed a better way to scale content delivery and reduce playback issues such as slow time-to-last-byte rates. The team was looking for a modern CDN that would be easy to maintain and support redundancy across multiple networks. To address this, U-Next chose Google Cloud Platform’s Media CDN.

Google Cloud Platform implemented Media CDN for U-Next, which was configured in just a few hours and moved into a proof of concept with live traffic in under 14 days. The solution achieved a 97% cache rate in 60 hours and later reached 98.3% in production, helping protect origin servers from overload. With Media CDN’s automated monitoring and logging through Cloud Logging and Cloud Monitoring, Google Cloud Platform also freed up more than 60% of an engineer’s time.
