A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
Swiss Steel, a 175‑year‑old European steelmaker, faced the challenge of connecting disparate mechanical and logistical systems across its production chain to stay competitive in a high‑cost environment. The company needed a scalable, secure platform to collect, transform and analyze large volumes of sensor and operations data so it could improve safety, logistics and overall efficiency.
Teaming with Google Cloud and partner Wabion, Swiss Steel built a networked platform using Google Maps, Firebase, Cloud Functions, Pub/Sub, Dataflow and BigQuery to centralize data, enable real‑time alerts (e.g., via worker smartwatches) and power analytics. The solution improved safety, reduced idling and IT maintenance, and—thanks to flexible, pay‑as‑you‑go pricing and process efficiencies—delivers direct and indirect savings of more than €500K expected over the next year, with ongoing plans for AI‑driven price prediction and predictive maintenance.
