Case Study: Laboratory for Traffic and Transport Engineering achieves scalable, cost-efficient traffic simulation with Google Cloud Platform

Solving urban congestion with a scalable game

The Laboratory for Traffic and Transport Engineering (LICIT), a French research lab focused on traffic flow modeling and regulation, needed a way to collect enough mobility data for its simulation game without the cost and inflexibility of traditional hosted infrastructure. LICIT worked with Google Cloud Platform and implementation partner NRX to support many simultaneous users while keeping the platform economical for intermittent use.

Google Cloud Platform helped LICIT build the solution on Google Kubernetes Engine, Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, and Stackdriver so the platform could scale up for data-collection sessions and scale down to zero when idle. The result was a flexible system that cut infrastructure costs, avoided investment in physical hardware, and could scale from about 200 users to 1,000 or more, with the potential to reach 10,000 simultaneous users.
