A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
ShareThis, a Palo Alto–based company that reaches 95% of U.S. Internet users across more than 2 million publisher sites and 120+ social channels, collects roughly a billion social data points a day (about 2 TB/day). Its Insights analytics portal became slow and costly to operate: large, complex queries could take days or were impossible to run, and the backend relied on four AWS Hadoop clusters with 160+ servers that required several engineers to maintain.
ShareThis migrated its data to Google Cloud Storage and moved analytics to BigQuery, a managed, SQL-like service that handles nested data and concurrent queries at scale. The new platform returns simple queries in seconds and complex analyses in minutes, lets analysts build reports in hours, enabled real-time demos during sales meetings, and reduced backend operational costs by 50–60% while freeing engineers for higher-value work.
