Scaling for success with Sky Q diagnostics

Sky, one of Europe’s leading media and telecommunications companies, needed a better way to collect and analyze diagnostic data from millions of Sky Q boxes. Its aging on-premises Hadoop platform was creating bottlenecks, processing backlogs of up to 50% of daily data, and putting service visibility at risk. Sky worked with Looker and Google Cloud partner Datatonic to modernize its data strategy and support its growing scale.

Looker’s solution, built on Google Cloud managed services, created a scalable pipeline for diagnostic data and made BigQuery a central hub for self-serve analytics and dashboards. The new architecture went live in less than six weeks, eliminated data loss, and required no additional DevOps, while allowing Sky to process 200–300 million events per day and scale to more countries without friction.
