Mercari, Japan’s largest peer-to-peer marketplace, needed a way to modernize its U.S. app, improve local user experience, and move from a bulky monolithic system to a more scalable architecture. Using Looker as part of its broader data portfolio, Mercari also wanted better visibility into product, operations, and business performance as it expanded.

Mercari implemented a microservices architecture on Google Cloud, with data and analytics workflows feeding into Looker for analysis and reporting. With this setup, Mercari created a new search function in less than one month instead of two, reduced infrastructure overhead enough to avoid hiring a full-time infrastructure engineer, and gained highly scalable, reliable operations for services like Merpay, which reached 2 million users within months.
