A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
The Regional Government of Castilla‑La Mancha, which serves 2 million people across a large, largely rural region, needed to expand e‑government services through a network of 470 “tech corners” (3,900 public computer access points) while overcoming costly, time‑consuming maintenance of desktop PCs and low digital literacy among parts of its population. Maintaining and updating machines across a wide territory caused downtime, required onsite visits, and hindered efforts to make online services broadly accessible.
The Directorate replaced desktops with Chromebooks (initially 400) managed through the Chrome Enterprise Admin console, partnering with Google partner Nubalia for rollout and training. The switch delivered near‑zero hardware malfunctions, faster log‑on and navigation, a 45% drop in incidents in year one, a reduction in technician headcount from 12 to 3, and about €70,000 annual savings on software upgrades. Based on the positive results, the government plans to deploy another 3,600 Chromebooks across 737 towns to widen access and support e‑literacy.
