A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
RAD-AID is a nonprofit that builds radiology services for low‑resource and medically underserved communities. To address a global shortage of diagnostic imaging and the practical barriers to deploying radiology — expensive climate‑controlled server rooms, limited IT staff, unreliable bandwidth, and local cloud restrictions — RAD-AID launched the RAD‑AID Friendship Initiative with Google Cloud Platform, Ambra Health, and Tribalco to scale radiology access and modernize partner hospital IT.
The initiative deployed a hybrid Friendship Cloud using Google Cloud Storage, compact Tribalco on‑prem servers preloaded with radiology software, and Ambra’s PACS to ensure local availability and cloud backup. Over three years RAD‑AID installed radiology platforms in 14 hospitals, each able to store more than 6,000 studies, eliminated costly on‑site server room build and maintenance, improved workflow reliability despite variable bandwidth, trained local staff, and created a roadmap for future AI and Cloud Healthcare API integrations.
