A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
Q42, a software development firm with teams in The Hague, Amsterdam and Mountain View, specializes in fast-moving web, mobile and Internet-of-Things projects. To deliver rapid prototypes and large, long-running programs without bogging developers down in server maintenance, database administration and security concerns, Q42 needed an environment that could scale automatically, protect customer data and let teams focus on building features.
Q42 used Google App Engine and Compute Engine, together with Node.js and Redis, to build all-cloud platforms for clients such as Philips (Hue) and the Rijksmuseum. The solution enabled automated scaling (running 137 instances within days), built-in data encryption, and high throughput—about 1,200 transactions per second (~100 million per day)—while freeing developers from infrastructure tasks; outcomes included Hue selling out on launch and 210,000 Rijksstudio galleries created without additional maintenance.
