Case Study: Podo achieves scalable, cost-effective handling of 1,000x traffic spikes with Google Cloud Platform

A Google Cloud Platform Case Study

Podo powering up with Google Cloud

Podo is a Spanish utilities startup that gives customers an online, machine‑learning–backed way to manage electricity and gas bills with tailored payment plans. As a young company competing with large incumbents, it needed a compliant, secure, low‑cost infrastructure that could stay agile and withstand huge traffic spikes with minimal downtime—especially ahead of a national advertising campaign.

Podo built its platform on Google Cloud Platform using Compute Engine, Cloud Load Balancing and Stackdriver, leveraging cloned instances, console-driven scaling and per‑minute billing to pay only for what it used. The result: it handled a thousandfold traffic spike to 50,000 users after a TV advert, cut server costs, gained fast, reliable autoscaling and comprehensive monitoring, and continues to expand services and experiment with Cloud Natural Language API.
