Philips Hue Lighting the world with Google Cloud

Signify, the Dutch lighting and smart home leader behind Philips Hue, needed a secure, scalable way to manage millions of connected Hue Bridges and smart devices across more than 180 countries. Its global IoT device management and cloud operations required high availability, elasticity, strong security, and controlled infrastructure costs, which led the company to use Google Cloud Platform and services such as Google Kubernetes Engine.

With Google Cloud Platform, Signify built a cloud-native, microservices-based architecture using GKE and other managed services to automate scaling, improve resilience, and strengthen security. The results included the ability to handle major traffic fluctuations across 20 clusters, faster rollout and incident response, and a 40% reduction in Device Management Cloud spend after migration, with further cost reductions expected from managed services and Compute Tau VMs.
