PGS Taking seismic intelligence to new depths

PGS, an integrated marine geophysics company based in Norway, needed to expand its resource-intensive seismic imaging and data processing capabilities without the cost and inflexibility of more on-premises infrastructure. To handle tens of petabytes of data and support growing demand, PGS turned to Google Cloud Platform, using Google Cloud services including Google Kubernetes Engine and Cloud Storage.

Google Cloud Platform helped PGS build a cloud-based high-performance computing environment that could scale on demand and act as a supercomputer in the cloud. The results were significant: PGS moved 80% of its HPC workload to Google Cloud, shut down two main data centers, increased compute power by nearly four times, and cut seismic survey turnaround times from about 20 days to just 2–3 days.
