A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
Pex is a Los Angeles–based analytics and rights-management platform that uses audio and visual fingerprinting to help creators, brands, and rights owners find, track, and monetize where their video and audio content appears online. As a lean startup operating at massive scale, Pex struggled with slow scaling and an incident of unplanned downtime that destroyed much of its infrastructure, threatening reliability and customer trust.
Pex migrated to Google Cloud Platform and re-architected on Compute Engine, Pub/Sub, BigQuery, Bigtable and Dataflow, using preemptible VMs for cost-efficiency. The move enabled rapid scaling to ~25,000 servers (spin-up times cut from 40 minutes to seconds), doubled monthly data to ~4 PB (about 1 billion items), eliminated downtime, improved processing speed and accuracy, supported 10x growth, and delivered profitability within four months while cutting infrastructure costs by up to 80%.
