A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
Optiva Inc. is a Canadian leader in telecom monetization software, powering real‑time billing, charging and policy management for 100+ carriers including BT, Claro and Vodafone. Faced with growing smartphone usage and transaction volumes, Optiva’s on‑premises clustered relational database hit a performance and scalability wall — forcing costly, complex multi‑site deployments — so the company set out to make its Charging Engine 10x faster while cutting infrastructure costs 10x to convince large CSPs to move mission‑critical charging to the cloud.
Optiva replatformed the Charging Engine on Google Cloud using Cloud Spanner and GKE, leveraging Spanner’s distributed, strongly consistent transactional architecture (TrueTime and Google’s network) and containerized deployment. The result: a 10x increase in database read/write performance, 10x reduction in infrastructure costs through elastic scaling, removal of legacy DB dependencies, and the ability to scale reads and writes across unlimited nodes to meet very high TPS demands.
