A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
Northrop Grumman, a leader in health IT, set out to accelerate personalized medicine by extracting actionable insights from massive and messy health data—genome sequences (100+ GB per person), electronic health records, handwritten notes and other clinical sources. The challenge was building scalable, secure infrastructure and analytics to process terabytes of heterogeneous data and reveal links between genetics, environment and disease.
The company prototyped a layered personalized health analytics platform built on Google Genomics, BigQuery and Compute Engine to store, annotate and analyze genomic and clinical data. The solution delivers near‑real‑time results (e.g., analyses across 1,000 patients and 200+ diseases in seconds), expands the knowledge base for personalized care, and offers improved security and lower costs compared with in‑house systems.
