NextPlane Improving patient safety with machine learning

NextPlane, founded in 2014, helps hospitals share and learn from patient safety stories to eliminate preventable harm. As demand for its XChange platform grew (adopted by more than 850 hospitals), NextPlane faced technical and compliance barriers: it needed a HIPAA‑compliant, scalable cloud solution and machine learning to analyze free‑text reports, remove identifying information, and make reporting and search easier.

NextPlane moved to Google Cloud Platform and adopted Compute Engine, Cloud Natural Language, and Cloud Speech to scale quickly, support HIPAA/SOC requirements, and automate de‑identification and classification of safety stories. The solution improved scalability and search, freed the team from infrastructure work, enabled faster, more secure information sharing across more organizations, and helps prevent thousands of deaths each year by accelerating learning from safety events.
