A Google Cloud Platform Case Study

Preview of the Mixi Case Study

mixi, Inc. Boosting player engagement with location-driven, real-world game play

Mixi, Inc., the Tokyo-based company behind the hit smartphone game Monster Strike, wanted to increase gameplay beyond scheduled quests by using GPS and location data to encourage players to open the app while on the move. To solve this challenge, Mixi used Google Cloud Platform’s Google Maps Platform and Playable Locations API to build a new location-based feature called MonSpot.

Google Cloud Platform helped Mixi implement MonSpot with safe, accessible real-world points of interest that could be woven into gameplay. The results were strong: more than 40% of active players launched MonSpot, active MonSpot users averaged a 30% increase in daily play sessions, and up to three times more players used Monster Strike during their commutes, boosting engagement and revenue.
