A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
Maxwell MRI, a Brisbane-based company applying deep learning to medical imaging, set out to improve prostate cancer diagnosis but faced significant scaling challenges. Their on-prem GPU servers couldn’t handle large per‑patient data volumes (200 MB–1+ GB), rapid turnaround needs, or the global access and data‑residency requirements needed for international growth.
Migrating to Google Cloud Platform—using Cloud Storage, Cloud ML Engine, Dataflow, Datastore and Spanner—allowed Maxwell to build automated upload and processing pipelines that train and run AI models at scale. The cloud solution processed thousands of anonymised cases (6,000 to date, ~144,000 forecast for 2018), delivered results to clinicians in 10–15 minutes, reduced development time and costs, and enabled planned international expansion while meeting local data compliance.
