L.L. Bean Modernizing the IT architecture at a 105-year-old retailer

L.L.Bean, the 105-year-old family-owned outdoor retailer with a strong e-commerce business ($1B of $1.6B annual revenue), needed to modernize aging, loosely connected on‑premises systems that limited its ability to deliver a seamless omnichannel customer experience. Legacy mainframes and disparate applications caused slow page loads, timeouts on long customer purchase histories, cumbersome upgrades, and the cost and inflexibility of provisioning for peak traffic.

Working with Fearless Technology Group, L.L.Bean migrated customer-facing services to Google Cloud Platform using Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Spanner, and a new React-based Front-End Architecture. The move enabled containerized deployments, pay-as-you-go scaling for peak demand, automated testing and faster release cycles, and pre-aggregated customer history data — resulting in faster page renderings, lower bounce rates, more consistent transaction responses, and quicker delivery of new features.
