ITV Delivering a higher quality live viewing experience through data

ITV, the UK’s largest commercial broadcaster, needed a way to monitor massive, unpredictable live-audience spikes on ITV Hub and detect streaming issues much faster than its existing analytics setup allowed. Working with Google Cloud Platform, ITV built a custom viewer analytics solution called CROCUS to track data in near real time during major events like Love Island and the World Cup.

Using Google Cloud Platform services including Cloud Pub/Sub, Cloud Dataflow, Cloud Functions, BigQuery, and Looker Studio, ITV delivered the solution in just three months. The platform now scales automatically to handle huge audience swings, surfaces alerts in as little as two minutes instead of ten, and processes viewership data in about 30 seconds, helping ITV improve operational agility and advance its business intelligence.
