IMIDEX Achieving 83% sensitivity in lung nodule detection with Google Vertex AI

IMIDEX, an American healthcare company focused on improving lung cancer detection with AI, machine learning, and computer vision, faced the challenge of building a more accurate and scalable way to identify lung nodules on chest X-rays. Its homegrown approach required heavy manual tuning and slowed progress, even though the company was working toward one of the first FDA-cleared medical devices built on Google Cloud Platform.

Using Google Cloud Platform’s Vertex AI, IMIDEX replaced much of its custom workflow with out-of-the-box machine learning tools, including AutoML and cloud pipelines, integrated with Cloud Storage and BigQuery. Google Cloud Platform helped the team finalize its model in just two weeks instead of nine months of trial and error, save three months during migration, and achieve 83% sensitivity—more than 30% better than radiologists alone.
