Icon Health & Fitness creating a more fun, immersive and social workout

ICON Health & Fitness, a leading maker of home fitness brands such as iFit, ProForm and NordicTrack, faced a common challenge: people struggle to start and stick with regular workouts. ICON set out to make exercise more fun, social and immersive so users would be more likely to maintain their routines.

The solution integrated Google Maps Platform into iFit-equipped treadmills and bikes—using Maps SDK for Android, Street View and the Elevation API—so users can choose real-world routes, see Street View imagery, have the equipment automatically match inclines, record and share runs, and compare times with others. The result: 13.5 million customized workouts, 76.5 million miles biked in virtual Street View, and measurable increases in user activity and retention.
