Hyperconnect, a Korea-based developer of the social discovery app Azar (60+ million downloads, about 30 million daily matches), needed to solve a major language barrier: roughly half of Azar’s daily matches are cross-language, but until now users could only communicate by text, losing the nuance of voice and facial cues and limiting meaningful connection.

Hyperconnect integrated Google Cloud Speech API, Google Cloud Translation API and Google Cloud Messaging to convert spoken words to text, translate them in real time, and deliver translated messages as on-screen speech bubbles so conversations remain natural and uninterrupted. Early Android tests show instantaneous voice translation, and the company expects a 10–20% increase in user satisfaction and matches as users make deeper, more meaningful international connections.
