Hafslund Innovating infrastructure for the new smart meter network

Hafslund, Norway’s largest power company and owner of grid operator Hafslund Nett (serving over 700,000 customers), faced a major data challenge when compulsory smart meters began delivering hourly readings and radio-mesh diagnostics. The rollout created high-volume, streaming and new diagnostic data types that required scalable, real-time storage and operational visibility to keep costs and maintenance visits down.

Working with Computas, Hafslund built a Google Cloud solution using BigQuery for streamed analytics, Cloud Bigtable for low-latency transactional queries, and Pub/Sub/Dataflow for ingestion. The platform provides unified, searchable storage and millisecond/microsecond responses, enables real-time customer dashboards, and uses granular diagnostics to pinpoint faults—reducing unnecessary field call-outs and improving maintenance efficiency.
