Case Study: GreatSchools achieves smarter school search and comparison for millions of parents with Google Cloud Platform

GreatSchools helping parents find the best schools for their children

GreatSchools is a national nonprofit that helps parents find and compare schools using trusted ratings, report cards and resources. To make it easier for families to search by location and assess options side-by-side, the organization needed a map-driven way to surface school locations, district boundaries and key performance data.

GreatSchools integrated Google Maps Platform—using the Maps Geocoding API to locate schools and the Maps JavaScript API to pin them—alongside detailed report cards (test scores, ratios, diversity) and boundary layers. The site now hosts 270,000 school profiles, attracts about 40 million visitors a year, and is used by families when moving and by advocacy groups to spotlight inequalities; for example, Latino families in Redwood City used the site’s data to partner with their school board to create a new charter school.
