Grasshopper Leaping into machine learning and quantitative analysis with Google Cloud

Grasshopper, a Singapore-based electronic trading firm and high-frequency market maker, needed more flexible infrastructure to support quantitative development, analysis, and new digital initiatives while maintaining strict performance and connectivity requirements for its core trading systems. The company had grown from a single-server setup to a distributed data-center environment, and it began trialing Google Cloud in 2015 for non-critical operations.

Looker, used alongside Google Cloud analytics capabilities, helped Grasshopper extend its data environment with cloud-based tools for machine learning and AI, including TensorFlow and Bigtable. The solution gave Grasshopper the flexibility to launch new services like a social media chat product for finance and to better support cryptocurrency exchange connectivity, while enabling thousands of trades a day and more than $500 billion in monthly notional trade value.
