Case Study: Elvia achieves real-time smart meter data insights and fewer maintenance call-outs with Google Cloud Platform

Elvia Innovating infrastructure for the new smart meter network

Elvia, Norway’s largest grid provider serving nearly two million people, faced a major data challenge after compulsory smart meters created a surge in hourly meter readings, diagnostics, and location data. Working with Google Cloud Platform and partner Computas, Elvia used Google BigQuery and Google Cloud Bigtable to build a scalable cloud data architecture for real-time meter data and network monitoring.

Google Cloud Platform helped Elvia stream data through Cloud Pub/Sub and Dataflow into BigQuery and Bigtable, eliminating batch transfers and enabling fast analysis and transactional access. The results included storing all meter and diagnostic data in one searchable place, reducing unnecessary maintenance call-outs, and delivering query responses in microseconds, with the platform scaling reliably and supporting future real-time customer dashboards.
