Karma, a Stockholm-based startup focused on helping customers make ethical, sustainable choices, struggled to scale its early microservices platform on bare metal infrastructure. As it expanded into the UK and France, its manual, expensive setup made deployments cumbersome and required significant engineering effort, prompting Karma to look for a more scalable cloud solution. While the case study highlights Google Cloud overall, Karma’s move also involved tools such as Kubernetes and BigQuery, with Looker often associated with data visibility in such environments.

Karma migrated its infrastructure to Google Cloud in stages, using Google Kubernetes Engine, Pub/Sub, Cloud Functions, Cloud Run, and BigQuery to automate operations and improve data access. The result was a much simpler, faster, and more cost-effective setup that reduced the burden on DevOps teams and gave nontechnical staff easier access to live data. With Looker and the broader Google Cloud stack supporting its growth, Karma was able to scale more efficiently and focus on expanding its user base.
