A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
EDP (Energias De Portugal) is a global leader in renewable energy serving millions of customers across 14 countries. Facing a complex IT landscape with over 400 applications and legacy systems that caused slow, unreliable customer-facing services (especially its mobile account app during back-end maintenance windows), EDP needed faster time-to-market, better scalability, and a shift to a DevOps culture where teams owned the full application lifecycle.
EDP rebuilt its customer app on Google Cloud Platform using Google App Engine, Cloud SQL/Datastore and Firebase (later adopting Docker on Google Kubernetes Engine), enabling autoscaling, near-cache access during maintenance, and improved notifications. The new platform was delivered in two months and, with continuous delivery, cut deploy time from days to under an hour. Results included up to 90% faster page loads, App Store ratings rising from 1.9 to 4.7, an 81% increase in NPS in six months, higher uptime and resilience, and faster customer-driven iteration.
