EchoStar: Modernizing an infrastructure that keeps the world connected

EchoStar, headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, needed a way to modernize its long-standing on-premises monolithic infrastructure and make better use of decades of data with AI/ML. In 2019, the satellite communications company turned to Google Cloud Platform, including Anthos and BigQuery, to help it scale operations, improve customer service, and better support its global internet and satellite businesses.

With Google Cloud Platform, EchoStar implemented a hybrid cloud and microservices approach, using Anthos, Google Kubernetes Engine, BigQuery, and AI/ML to modernize applications and automate field operations. The results were significant: business agility increased 3x, release deployment time dropped from 7 days to under an hour, time to market fell from 3 months to a couple of weeks, tech refresh cycles shrank from 6 months to 6 weeks, and software licensing costs were reduced.
