Eagle County Prepared for natural disasters

Eagle County, Colorado — home to roughly 50,000 residents and hundreds of thousands of annual visitors — faces frequent natural hazards from wildfires to floods across rugged mountain terrain. County officials needed a faster, more reliable way to broadcast emergency information and coordinate multiple agencies because their legacy emergency operations processes were fragmented and slow during crises.

Eagle County rebuilt its emergency operations center around Google Maps Platform and G Suite, publishing real‑time evacuation maps, road closures, and resource locations while using Docs, Hangouts, Forms, Sites, Drive, and Gmail to streamline collaboration. The approach supported the Lake Christine Fire response — helping evacuate about 3,500 residents across 1,700 homes — produced a fire map viewed nearly 550,000 times, and enabled quicker, more coordinated emergency communications with minimal training.
