A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
Degoo, a Stockholm‑based cloud storage app that offers 100 GB free (and up to 2 TB for premium users), has grown to over 9 million installs and is adding about 1.7 million new installs a month. That rapid growth — combined with intense price competition and a small, nine‑person team — created scaling, cost and maintenance pressures that limited the company’s ability to innovate and focus on user experience.
Degoo migrated 1 PB of data to Google Cloud Platform in two weeks, using Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Firebase and Cloud Machine Learning to offload infrastructure work to managed services. The move cut storage costs by about two‑thirds, delivered immediate bandwidth savings of 65% and storage savings of 30%, reduced maintenance overhead, and enabled deeper behavior analysis and future ML features to improve retention and product value.
