Current Preparing teenagers for financial responsibility

Current is a U.S. financial‑technology company that offers a teen-focused Visa debit card and companion app to teach budgeting, allowances, chores and real‑time spending alerts. As the user base grew past 25,000 daily active customers, Current faced performance and reliability challenges: a Neo4j graph database running on shared servers caused bottlenecks, logging and profiling were limited, infrastructure was manually managed, and the team feared downtime and rising costs from hosted database options.

Current built a highly available Neo4j cluster and moved most services into Docker containers on Google Kubernetes Engine, using Container Registry, Stackdriver logging, secure ingress rules and other GCP services. The migration cut hosting costs by 60%, eliminated downtime while supporting 7x user growth to 175,000, sped time to market by 400%, reduced error resolution time by 80%, and enabled new service deployments in hours instead of days.
