Case Study: Cotral achieves real-time passenger insights and lower emissions with Google Cloud Platform

Cotral Using real-time data to help people plan their bus journeys efficiently and with ease

Cotral, an Italian public transportation company serving more than 70 million passengers a year in Lazio, needed a better way to provide accurate, real-time travel information and improve journey planning for its 200,000 daily riders. Working with Google Cloud Platform through Google Maps Platform, Cotral sought a solution that was easy to implement, customizable, and able to reduce costs and environmental impact while supporting commuter needs.

Google Cloud Platform, with help from partner Web Geo Services, implemented a website and app using the Maps JavaScript API and Distance Matrix API to show live bus locations, travel times, ticketing points, and optimized routes. The result was a 33% increase in customer satisfaction, around 30% cost savings per kilometer, and lower carbon emissions through fewer runs and more efficient maintenance and service planning.
