Converting unstructured clinical data into structured data for scientific research with Google Cloud

IEO-Monzino, the European Oncological Institute and Monzino Cardiology Center in Milan, needed a way to turn large volumes of clinical reports, medical records, and exam data into standardized, anonymized, and research-ready information. Working with Looker and Google Cloud tools as part of its Clinical Data Platform, the healthcare group aimed to improve research, clinical operations, and patient care while maintaining GDPR-compliant privacy and security.

Looker helped deliver interactive dashboards and reporting that made data easier for doctors and managers to use, while AI and NLP workflows standardized clinical information from 76,000 medical reports in about two months—roughly 300x faster than manual processing. The solution also automated KPI extraction for certifications, saving time and reducing workload, and gave IEO-Monzino a scalable foundation for future AI models and patient-trial matching.
