Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine Integrating genetic data and patient records in the cloud to personalize care

The Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine (CCPM) at the University of Colorado operates Health Data Compass, a data warehouse that combines genomics, electronic health records and external data to personalize diagnosis and treatment. CCPM needed a secure, scalable way to integrate and analyze massive, disparate patient and genetic datasets quickly and cost‑effectively while meeting HIPAA requirements.

After a six‑month pilot CCPM migrated Health Data Compass to Google Cloud Platform (Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Genomics, Compute Engine) and deployed Tableau for self‑service analytics. The move cut a key record‑linkage job from 8 hours to 15 minutes (about 97% faster), reduced operating costs, improved scalability and security for HIPAA compliance, and accelerated research and clinical insights.
