Cognite Creating real-time models of Aker BP

Cognite is a Norway-based IIoT startup that helps heavy industries digitize by breaking proprietary data silos and creating a contextualized, real-time virtual representation of operations. Working with Aker BP, Cognite faced the challenge of ingesting and correlating massive, high-frequency time-series streams from sensors and legacy systems, while delivering low-latency access, strict security, and the ability to scale without platform failures that previously caused minutes‑long delays or crashes.

Cognite built its platform on Google Cloud Bigtable and other Google managed services (GKE, Pub/Sub, Dataflow), enabling reliable autoscaling, encryption, and fine-grained access control. The solution streams over 500,000 events/sec, yields 200–300 ms response times (about 50× faster than alternatives), and scales easily to handle much larger loads—helping Aker BP reduce OpEx/CapEx, cut downtime, and improve operational safety.
