Chicago Department of Transportation helping to build a new Chicago

The Chicago Department of Transportation needed a better way to manage a growing slate of street-paving and infrastructure projects and to coordinate work among city departments and external utilities to reduce conflicts, duplicate efforts, and traffic disruptions. Existing processes made it hard to see overlapping permits, projects, and special events, hindering efficient planning and wasting taxpayer dollars.

Working with SADA and Google Cloud, CDOT launched dotMaps, an intuitive web mapping app built on Google Maps Platform that displays about 30,000 live projects and combines permit, project, and event data in one place with real‑time geolocation and radius searches to spot conflicts. The tool improved collaboration between public and private entities, cut duplicate work, eased congestion, and delivered more than $24 million in documented savings in 2014.
