ARD Building a digital-first public broadcasting service with Google Cloud

ARD, Germany’s public-service broadcaster network, needed to modernize its aging monolithic video platform and keep pace with changing media consumption habits. Using Google Cloud Platform, including Google Kubernetes Engine and an API-centered approach, ARD set out to improve scalability, speed up development, and deliver a better experience across devices.

Google Cloud Platform helped ARD rebuild ARD Mediathek on a cloud-native, microservices-based architecture with managed services such as Apigee, Memorystore, Firebase, and managed MongoDB. The result was a major business impact: annual views on ARD Mediathek doubled from 50 million to 100 million, average session time increased from 20 to 50 minutes, and release cycles accelerated from three months to one production release per day.
