AccuWeather Opening its APIs for new customers and new revenue

AccuWeather, a global leader in weather media and big data that serves nearly 2 billion people and processes over 30 billion API requests daily, wanted to reach individual developers and monetize its extensive weather data. The company needed a way to offer tiered, efficient APIs (current conditions, hourly/daily forecasts, indices) with appropriate rate limits and billing, while making access self-service and scalable for massive, variable traffic.

Using Apigee Edge to power an AccuWeather API Developer Portal, the company packaged APIs into priced products with flexible billing (base fee plus CPM), enabled quick sign-up, testing, and pay-as-you-go growth, and used analytics to monitor usage and identify upsell opportunities. The result: rapid adoption — 6,500+ signups, ~2,500 API keys, and nearly 60 paid package purchases within two months — while supporting billions of daily requests and creating a clear path from hobbyist developers to enterprise partners.
