London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Goes Mobile And Saves Money With Chromebooks

The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham needed to upgrade IT for 3,500 council staff amid severe budget cuts and the impending Windows XP end‑of‑life. Facing the choice of replacing 3,500 desktops and 800 laptops or finding a lower‑maintenance, more mobile solution that met UK government security rules, the council sought a future‑proof platform for increasingly web‑based work.

The council deployed Chromebooks and Chromeboxes (working with CESG standards and partners Ancoris and Elevate East London), using Citrix virtual desktops now and moving apps into the browser over time. The rollout reduced device count by about 1,000, saved £200,000 versus replacing Windows desktops plus an estimated £200,000 in electricity costs, and delivered greater mobility, security compliance, and more efficient use of office space.
