BlackLight Studio Games, a 15-person studio in New Delhi behind Ludo SuperStar (1M+ daily active users), needed to diversify revenue beyond in‑app purchases without harming user experience, retention, or IAP revenue. To solve this, BlackLight turned to Google AdMob’s smart segmentation to find a way to add ads selectively without disrupting paying players.
Using Google AdMob’s smart segmentation, BlackLight implemented a single interstitial ad targeted to predicted non-spenders (placed in offline mode), rolled out gradually, and automated segmentation with minimal engineering time. The result: interstitial ad revenue rose 38% and overall game revenue grew 23%, while retention and ARPPU remained steady; CPMs held up and fill rate was 100%. BlackLight expects further upside as the rollout reaches more users.
