Harmonix Performs Load Testing on GoGrid Cloud Infrastructure

Harmonix Music Systems, the Cambridge-based studio behind the Rock Band series, faced large, predictable spikes in network traffic during new game launches and holiday seasons—often as much as 20× normal load. Their in-house load-testing approach raised security and resource constraints and couldn’t scale to the instance counts needed for realistic peak simulations, so they sought a cloud-based solution.

By using GoGrid’s IaaS, Harmonix programmatically provisioned around 100 cloud servers to simulate more than 60,000 concurrent users, automate test runs and centralized reporting, and push backend systems to failure as part of standard procedures. The result: lower total cost of ownership for testing infrastructure, stronger protection of the online experience (and revenue from downloadable content), and reduced effort and stress for the networking team.
