How GoContractor Changed Orientations

Manchester Smart Motorways (MSM), a major upgrade to the M60 and M62 led by Balfour Beatty, faced a large-scale onboarding challenge: every new worker required a time-consuming, three-hour in‑office orientation that reduced productivity, burdened safety staff and risked inductee disengagement. To streamline this process MSM adopted GoContractor’s online orientations software platform to replace the lengthy single-session briefing with a more efficient workflow.

GoContractor delivered a two-stage solution: a 25–30 minute online induction and test (with passcode certification) followed by a shorter, site‑specific office session and drug/alcohol screening averaging 1 hour 15 minutes. The GoContractor system enabled same‑day site starts, produced estimated cost savings of circa £120,000 (based on ~2,000 inductees at £30/hr), delivered about 4,000 extra onsite hours and measurable staff time savings (for example, half a day per week for a safety advisor), and generated positive contractor feedback once initial teething issues were resolved.
