Special Education Leaders from Hawaii Help Teachers Connect with Students with Behavior Challenges

The Campbell-Kapolei Complex Area, a district within the Hawaii Department of Education, faced a significant challenge with an increase in volatile and disruptive student behaviors. Their teachers lacked the specific skillset to effectively de-escalate these situations, which often led to instructional time loss, strained relationships, and the need for frequent district-level intervention. To address this, they partnered with the vendor Goalbook and utilized its Toolkit product to design a solution.

The solution implemented was a Behavior Strategies Quick Reference Guide, created using the UDL Strategy Pages within Goalbook Toolkit. This guide provided teachers with a user-friendly, actionable list of research-based strategies aligned to specific disruptive behaviors, empowering them to de-escalate students and continue instruction. The measurable impact Goalbook helped them achieve was a reduction in the number of occurrences of disruptive behaviors, leading to increased teacher efficacy and a more consistent learning environment for all students.
