Lessons learned from Newham's participatory budget program

Newham Council sought to enhance transparency, trust, and resident participation in local decision-making and budget allocation. To achieve this, they launched their Community Assemblies initiative and later partnered with the vendor Go Vocal to implement their digital community engagement platform, Newham Co-create.

Using Go Vocal's platform, which featured participatory budgeting modules and information-sharing tools, the council facilitated a dramatic increase in engagement, from 3,147 resident interactions to 16,552. The program funded over 300 resident-led projects with a £1.6 million investment. The measurable impact was significant, with 89% of participants feeling more connected to their local area and 82% feeling they had a greater say in funding, showcasing the success of the solution provided by Go Vocal.
