One Of The World’s Largest Passpoint Wi-fi Services Delivers Data Offload For At&t In New York City

AT&T needed to add mobile data capacity in dense Manhattan streets where macrocell sites and rooftop antennas were constrained. Working with GlobalReach Technology, AT&T used a Passpoint public Wi‑Fi service (including RADIUS/AAA, a custom captive portal and GlobalReach’s Passpoint OSS/cloud authentication platform) to enable seamless, secure Wi‑Fi offload via LinkNYC kerbside kiosks.

GlobalReach Technology’s solution integrated with AT&T AAA to authenticate up to four million AT&T sessions per day via a SIM profile without registration, using Passpoint 802.11u discovery and 1 Gbps backhaul per kiosk. The deployment offloaded roughly 400 TB of mobile data in 100M sessions per month (peak 16 TB/day across 4M sessions; up to 1.28 TB in 350k peak commuter sessions), reduced cellular congestion and improved LTE‑like speeds, while creating new revenue for CityBridge and earning industry recognition.
