A Global Cash Card Case Study
Starbucks, the global specialty coffee roaster and retailer with more than 14,000 U.S. locations, faced major payroll distribution challenges—especially after 2013 overnight delivery failures—that threatened timely pay delivery across a vast, disaster-prone store network. The company also sought cost savings and reductions in unclaimed pay (escheatment).
Starbucks piloted an automated paycard program with Global Cash Card at six stores, using targeted training and a largely self-explanatory roll-out to scale quickly. The solution ensured employees on paycards were paid on time even during delivery disruptions, helped raise electronic pay from 70% to 82% (with a 90% target), expanded to 22 states, reduced payroll input errors through automation, and was well received by employees for budgeting and discretionary use.
