Kon-Tiki Museum brings Thor Heyerdahl’s 101-day Pacific voyage to VR with Glitch Studios

The Kon-Tiki Museum sought new ways to engage visitors by bringing them closer to Thor Heyerdahl's epic 1947 raft expedition across the Pacific Ocean. They partnered with vendor Glitch Studios to create an immersive virtual reality experience that would condense the 101-day journey for a modern audience.

Glitch Studios developed a detailed HD 6K 360 animated video with ambisonic spatial audio, meticulously recreating the raft and its ocean environment. The solution, deployed on Oculus Go headsets, was successfully completed in 2019. The VR experience now enriches museum visits, allowing guests to deeply engage with Heyerdahl's legacy by virtually boarding the Kon-Tiki raft.
